Councilmember Agran Pledges Future Agenda Item on All American Asphalt

Councilmember Larry Agran publicly announced he would be setting a full discussion item on All American Asphalt (AAA) at a future City Council meeting. 

During the June 28 Irvine City Council meeting, citing numerous violations of federal and state laws and regulations, he said we “absolutely need to take the steps” to relocate the plant and hold AAA accountable for carcinogenic emissions. Neighboring communities, their kids and families in North Irvine have repeatedly reported an unlivable air quality.

Months ago, stakeholders committed to a relocation and shutdown of the plant by March 2023, before the City  allowed construction of new homes in Orchard Hills. The City, according to Larry, has failed to meet its obligations by hiring special counsel and pursuing an aggressive public nuisance lawsuit. Councilmember Agran said: 

“We don’t seem to be making any significant progress. It’s imperative that we get moving on this and get moving on a pledge that was made. We need to take the steps to be on their side, at their side.”

At the June 28 meeting, Councilmember Agran and the City Council voted unanimously to reverse course on the Rule of Two. When their vote takes effect, councilmembers will be allowed to agendize items without the approval of colleagues.
