University High School Students Recognized by Councilmember Agran

Recognizing University High School Marine Biology students and their teachers Mr. David Knight and Ms. Cheyenne Sullivan was a pleasure for Councilmember Agran. Every class of students created marine-animal sculptures, including a narwhal, orca, and jellyfish, out of garbage that often pollutes the ocean. Their recycled ready-made sculptures embody a vision for Irvine: someday soon, we may reuse all we consume.
Siara Gunwardhana, one of the University High School students, created a jellyfish structure out of PVC pipe, trash bags, and recyclable bottles. She told the Councilmember Agran team,
“Thank you so much for the opprtunity and for coming out to recognize our efforts!”
Councilmember Agran has always been a champion for recycling programs ever since he helped Irvine launch curbside recycling in 1990. He was enthusiastic about these students’ work, saying:
“Congratulations to the students on the creativity and passion they displayed in their projects. I appreciate their commitment to sustainability and science in Irvine.”
